The Weekly Blog is made up of political musings by me, Elena Steier. I try to update them every Sunday night .

Negotiations Timing is everything. Perhaps I'm cynical about money being everything when it comes to Iraq, but it seems very fortuitous that we find Saddam a couple of days after Bush refused Iraqi contracts to European corporations. It seems that Bush's contention might have interfered with Jim Baker's attempts at cooercing Europeans to forgive Iraqi debt. Why would they want to help us out with that sort of cloud hanging over their economic heads? But then add Saddam into the picture... first, it shows the the Americans are in fact in charge of Iraq. Second, it shines a bright light on the monster who, after all, was being funded by European cash. Suddenly, European complicity in Saddam's war crimes comes into sharper focus. Oh well. It's a thought. 12-15-03 |
