Today's Courant details allegations made by our felonious former Secretary of the Treasury, Paul Silvester, regarding the activities surrounding state investments under his tenure. I'm posting it because I've often said that so goes Connecticut, so goes the country. The article itself might not make much sense unless you know Connecticut politics, so here are some of the more salient features: 1. That Connecticut Democrats were subverting their own candidates in order to keep the Republican cash cows in place. 2. That our governor, like Bush, is the eye of a vast conspiracy...not right wing conspirarcy...but a conspiracy of sleezy, greedy chumps hoping to get really, really rich on government funds. Party affiliation means nothing. 3. Connecticut sleeze reaches right into the Bush government, as our former treasurer is Christopher Burnham , the present Assistant Secretary of State for Resource Management and Chief Financial Officer under Bush. The article details that not only was he doing sleezy deals, he planned on blackmailing our governor. 4. Another example of Connecticut sleeze reaching into the Bush government is the involvement of Top Republican fundraiser Wayne Berman. "Wayne Berman, a national Republican activist and consultant, hired Silvester in his private consulting firm in 1999, after Silvester left office. Silvester said he had made a state pension fund investment that delivered Berman a fat finder's fee. Silvester described Berman to federal investigators as "the ultimate Republican insider." Berman was so connected, Silvester said, he had a hard time fathoming the political ingenuity of some of Berman's deals. In one such arrangement, described in an FBI document as "another shady deal," Silvester said Berman explained how, through his influence with state Republican organizations, he was making money from both sides in insurance deals. Silvester said that when he blinked in incomprehension, an impatient Berman snapped, "Look, don't be so ----- stupid, we get paid from both ends." 7-29-03 |
